The Start of the work of the forum on the participation of NGOs at the 62nd ordinary session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights

Nouakchott, 21/04/2018 - The Commissioner for Human Rights and Humanitarian Action, Cheikh Tourad Ould Abdel Maleck, oversaw Saturday morning in Nouakchott the start of the work of the forum on the participation of NGOs at the 62nd Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights scheduled in Mauritania from April 25 to May 9, 2018.

The periodic forum on the margins of the meetings of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights provides an opportunity to review the human rights situation in Africa and exchange experiences and opinions on means and mechanisms for the protection of human rights in general.

Among the topics to be discussed during this meeting are the mechanisms applied in the continent for the prevention of torture, the situation of prisons, conditions of detention, the situation of human rights defenders in Africa and the situation of human rights defenders. refugees and migrants.

In a word for the occasion, the Commissioner for Human Rights and Humanitarian Action said he was very pleased to see Mauritania host the 62nd session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights. before welcoming, on behalf of the Mauritanian Government, all participants in the various meetings that will be organized during this session.

He added that by hosting events as important as these, Mauritania proves the great interest accorded by the President of the Republic, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz in the consolidation and protection of the rights of the man at the national and continental levels. It also reflects, he said, the strength of relations between Mauritania and African institutions for the protection of human rights.

The Commissioner noted that the Forum of Non-Governmental Organizations is an important forum for consultation and exchange on issues relating to respect for human rights and democracy in Africa, which makes it an essential mechanism in the system. mission to strengthen and protect human and peoples ’rights and an indispensable platform for the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights in the analysis of the human rights situation in African countries and the definition of the topics to be discussed by the participants and the decisions to be adopted in the ordinary sessions of the commission.

For his part, Mr. Remi Ngag Lombu, on behalf of the Chairperson of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, thanked Mauritania for the great efforts it has made in the framework of the organization of this session and the meetings that will take place in its margins.

He added that the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights will have to discuss during its current session the human rights situation in Africa by giving all participants the opportunity to express their points of view. view of the different areas related to it.

For his part, the president of the forum of Mauritanian non-governmental actors, Mr. Mohamedou Ould Sidi, said that human rights occupy an important place in the concerns of peoples and governments because being a political, social and popular grievance of all, highlighting the role played by its institution in contributing to the protection and promotion of human rights.

The opening ceremony was attended by the President of the National Human Rights Commission and Wali of West Nouakchott.
